Mariamalia Calzada, AFPA

Mariamalia is our Nutrition and Wellness Consultant. She is currently studying to be a Certified Health Coach with the American Council of Exercise, NCCA-accredited.

Mariamalia has a Bachelor Degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Costa Rica, graduating in 1997. After her graduation, she worked as a dietitian and diabetes educator in a Diabetes Clinic for ten years, working as well in a Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic for three. Mariamalia was a professor-assistant in Human Nutrition and Diet Therapy at the University of San Jose from 1997 to 2000. She has extensive experience in helping patients and families to lose weight and control their diabetes—she gives her patients tools to help them learn how to eat in a healthier way. From 1997 to 2003, she appeared on local newscasts and newspapers talking about healthy diets and the prevention of Obesity and Diabetes.

Mariamalia grew up and originally trained, in Costa Rica. After her arrival in the United States, she lived in Florida and cared for her small children, moving to Maryland in 2014. She loves to cook and modify recipes to discover healthier versions of them. Mariamalia has two beautiful teenagers in high school and is part of the Stephen Ministry of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Bethesda, MD. She is fluent in Spanish, English and French.

She spearheads our programs for wellness, specifically through her offering of Nutrition and Weight Management – Individual Counseling and Group Sessions Under our guidance, the individualized programs will guide you in achieving your wellness goals:

In addition to the initial consultation, follow-up visits will provide continuous reinforcement and support in reaching your nutrition and wellness goals. Our nutrition consultant is available to meet with you by appointment.

Every 2nd Saturday of each month, you can enjoy a Free Nutrition Class from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. Each class has a different theme; Obesity, Food, and Nutrients, Why do I need to change my lifestyle?, Healthy Habits for children, Healthy Holidays, etc.
